During a person’s lifetime more than 30 tons of food pass through our digestive tract. When the gut falters, disease and premature aging are the results and the origins of almost all chronic inflammatory disorders can be traced back to improper digestion, absorption, or elimination.
The digestive tract is 25 to 30 feet in length, it starts at the mouth and ends at the rectum. Digestion is a complex process, turning the food we eat into energy we need to survive. It begins in the mouth and while enzymes are being added during the chewing phase it is also sending signals to the stomach to prepare the digestive juices needed to break down foods for absorption.
The liver is then processing all digested foods to break down harmful substances such as hormonal and microbial by-products and the small intestines extract and assimilate. The last nutritionally active portion of food finishes its journey in the large intestine with the final step of the now firmly digested material is the rectum where it awaits the signal from the brain to let go.
